Lisbon named world's happiest holiday destination

Lisbon has been named the world’s happiest holiday destination according to the Holiday Happiness Index. The study, conducted by BookRetreats in collaboration with Harvard psychologist Natalie Dattilo-Ryan, analyzed 47 global cities based on wellness-oriented metrics rather than traditional luxury or historical monuments.

The ranking evaluates five equally weighted factors: sunlight, sleep quality, healthy food options, access to nature, and walkability. Lisbon secured the top position due to its high number of annual sunny hours—approximately 2,828—its pedestrian-friendly infrastructure, and its proximity to nature and the coast.

Other top-ranking cities included Helsinki, Orlando, Athens, and Edinburgh. The report suggests a shift in travel psychology, where travelers increasingly prioritize mental clarity and physical well-being, such as walking, healthy eating, and adequate rest, over visiting major landmarks.
