TAP Air Portugal privatization: Air France-KLM and Lufthansa submit final bids

Air France-KLM and the Lufthansa Group have submitted their final, improved proposals to acquire a 44.9% stake in the Portuguese flag carrier, TAP Air Portugal. The deadline for these 'best and final offers' was September 30, 2026.

Following the submission, the Portuguese government and Parpública, the state holdings manager, have a 15-day period to evaluate the bids. A final decision on the winner is expected by mid-October. The privatization process includes a 5% share reservation for TAP employees.

The competition between the French-Dutch group and the German group follows a negotiation phase triggered because the initial binding offers were deemed too similar. Beyond price, the government is evaluating the bids based on strategic criteria, including route development, fleet investment, and industrial projects. This sale is part of a broader effort to manage public debt and finalize the restructuring of the airline, which received 3.2 billion euros in state support during the pandemic.
