Lisbon residents petition for referendum on shared electric scooters

The Automóvel Clube de Portugal (ACP) has collected approximately 20,000 signatures from registered Lisbon residents to trigger a municipal referendum regarding the continuation of shared electric scooter systems in the city. This figure is four times the legal requirement of 5,000 signatures.

The initiative aims to address concerns regarding road and pedestrian safety, accessibility, and the occupation of public sidewalks. The ACP cited high accident rates, noting over 1,300 scooter-related accidents in 2024 and more than 5,000 since 2019.

The proposal will now be formally presented to the Lisbon Municipal Assembly (AML). Following an initial legal verification and a 15-day committee analysis, the matter will proceed to a plenary vote. If approved by the Assembly, the decision will be sent to the Constitutional Court to verify its legality before the citizens are called to vote on the future of the city's approximately 6,000 shared electric scooters.
