Lisbon Stock Index Gains While Portugal's Economy Slumps After General Strike

The Portuguese stock market opened higher on Thursday, with the PSI (Portuguese Stock Index) rising 0.60% to 8,950.24 points after a slight decline the previous day.

On the same day, Portugal’s daily economic activity indicator fell 5.1% on June 3, the day of a nationwide general strike, according to Banco de Portugal. The drop persisted throughout the strike week except for Monday. The government described union participation as “residual,” while the CGTP claimed turnout matched December’s levels. Labour Minister Maria da Palma Ramalho said most workers remained on the job, highlighting a dispute over the strike’s impact on the economy.
