Lisbon to suspend and remove shared electric scooters

The Lisbon City Council has approved the suspension and total removal of shared electric scooters from the municipality. The decision establishes a 60-day period for the cessation of operations and the removal of all shared scooter vehicles from public spaces.

City officials stated the move aims to create a “more organised, safer city with a more orderly and respectful public space for everyone.” Carlos Moedas, president of the Lisbon City Council, cited improper parking and the obstruction of pedestrian movement—particularly affecting the elderly, people with reduced mobility, the visually impaired, and families with strollers—as primary reasons for the necessity of the step.

This policy aligns Lisbon with other European cities, such as Paris, Madrid, and Brussels, which have implemented similar measures. To support alternative soft mobility, the council approved the expansion of the city's cycling network, including an increase in the number of Gira network stations and available bicycles. Additionally, a new Municipal Regulation for Soft Mobility is expected to be presented within one year.
