Lisbon transport firm Carris rejects reinstatement of workers linked to fraudulent disability pensions

Lisbon’s municipal transport operator Carris confirmed it will not readmit roughly 30 employees who obtained disability pensions through a fraudulent scheme orchestrated by doctor Emuna Mia. The company said the workers’ contracts terminated when the pensions were granted, so there is no automatic right to return to work.

The scheme, investigated by the Judicial Police’s anti‑corruption unit and the Public Prosecutor’s Office, led to a review of the affected pensions by the Institute of Social Security. Carris noted that any pension complement depends on the existence of the pension itself, and if the pension is withdrawn the complement ceases as well. Unions have been informed of the company’s position.
