Lisbon's Luís de Camões Airport budget set at €7.9‑€8.9 bn, opening projected 2035‑2037

Portugal’s new Lisbon airport, to be built on the Alcochete firing range and named Luís de Camões, has an updated investment estimate of €7.9 billion to €8.9 billion (2024 prices). Construction is scheduled to start in 2029, with the main works finishing by 2033 and the facility capable of opening as early as 2035, though the government may target a phased opening by 2037.

The airport will feature two runways, a passenger terminal of about 500,000 m², 64 boarding gates and 72 air bridges, and an initial capacity of 56 million passengers per year, expandable to around 85 million. It is billed as the largest infrastructure project in Portugal in recent decades and, according to industry leaders, unmatched in scale across Western Europe.

Key transport links include a dedicated high‑speed rail line that will connect the airport to Lisbon’s centre in roughly 20 minutes via the planned Third Tagus Crossing, as well as new road connections such as a 17‑km segment of the A33 motorway. Preparatory actions underway involve the demilitarisation of the Alcochete site, air‑space reorganisation, and the installation of utilities and telecommunications needed for the “Net‑Zero” facility.
