Lisbon’s Luís de Camões Airport to Open by 2035 with 20‑minute rail link to city centre

Portugal’s new Luís de Camões Airport, to be built in Alcochete, is slated to begin construction in 2029 and reach structural completion by 2033. After testing and certification, the airport is expected to open for passenger traffic in 2035, earlier than the previously projected mid‑2027 timeframe.

The facility will have an initial capacity of 56 million passengers per year, two runways and a 500 000 m² terminal. Investment is estimated between €7.9 billion and €8.9 billion (2024 prices). A dedicated high‑speed rail line will connect the airport to Lisbon’s centre in about 20 minutes, with service slated to start in 2034. Officials predict up to 20 million rail passengers annually, complementing the airport’s overall traffic.

The project details were presented by Hugo Espírito Santo, Portugal’s Secretary of State for Infrastructure, during a parliamentary session on airport expansion. The technical report was delivered by ANA (Aeroportos de Portugal) and includes plans for four rail tracks, three platforms and links to the national high‑speed network.
