Lisbon's Proposed Alcochete Airport Sparks Criticism Over Priorities

The Portuguese government has unveiled plans for a new airport at Alcochete, intended to serve Lisbon. Aviation commentator Pedro Castro warned that the project could divert essential resources, such as housing construction, toward airport infrastructure, access roads, hangars, and hotels.

Castro also cautioned that the new facility may lead to an influx of tourists that exceeds current capacity, require additional immigration to staff the works, and potentially empty out other regional airports, arguing that a new airport is no longer a forward‑looking public policy choice.
