Lismore island discovery reveals 1,400-year-old monastery
Archaeologists have discovered the remains of an early medieval monastic center on the Scottish island of Lismore, approximately 1,400 years old. The findings, published in the journal Antiquity, provide material evidence for long-standing local traditions and historical records suggesting the site was a significant religious and cultural hub.
Excavations revealed a cemetery, building remains, and evidence of sophisticated craftsmanship. The site appears to have been a developed center for worship, learning, and industry, potentially comparable to some of the most prominent monasteries in early medieval Britain. While direct evidence from the 6th-century founding attributed to Saint Mo Luoc has not yet been found, artifacts and burial practices from between the 7th and 10th centuries offer new insights into the monastery's scale and influence in spreading Christianity across northwestern Europe.
