Lismore residents to shape future of 70 hectares of flood buyback land

Residents, businesses, and community groups in Lismore can now participate in shaping the future of more than 70 hectares of land acquired through flood buyback programs. The land, which includes over 600 flood-prone properties purchased via the Australian and NSW Government-funded Resilient Homes Program, is strictly prohibited from being used for future housing.

The precinct planning process focuses on identifying flood-compatible uses across four key areas of the city. Potential developments include parklands, recreational hubs, cultural spaces, environmental zones, and commercial areas. Decision-makers will evaluate proposals based on flood risk, community benefit, economic opportunity, and environmental and cultural values.

Consultation efforts include engagement with the Board of Widjabul Wia-bal Gurrumbil Aboriginal Corporation to ensure land management and cultural priorities are integrated into the plans. Community members can contribute through online surveys, workshops, and drop-in sessions.
