Literacy rates and reading habits show significant decline

Data indicates a significant decline in reading proficiency and habits, particularly among younger populations and American adults. According to The Nation’s Report Card, reading scores for fourth and eighth graders have been falling since before 2019, with 2024 results showing fewer than one-third of students reading at a proficient level.

Gallup analysis of Department of Education data suggests more than half of American adults read below a sixth-grade level. Additionally, the percentage of Americans reading for pleasure has decreased, dropping from 61 percent in 1992 to 49 percent in 2022. Daily reading for pleasure among Americans fell from 28 percent in 2004 to 16 percent in 2023.

Researchers note that this decline may impact critical thinking, empathy, and cognitive focus. Neuroscientists at Emory University have observed that reading novels can produce heightened brain connectivity that persists for days after a book is finished.
