Literacy emphasized as a tool for citizenship and social inclusion

During International Literacy Week, Universidade Rovuma (UniRovuma) held a colloquium in Nampula to discuss adult literacy as a vital tool for social transformation and active citizenship. Organized by the Center for Studies in Educational Policies and Practices (CEPPE), the event emphasized that literacy goes beyond basic reading and writing, serving as a strategic element for sustainable development and community empowerment.

Experts at the event highlighted that literacy enables individuals to make informed decisions and exercise their rights. Local education officials noted that literacy programs can lead to community leadership roles, advocating for continuous approaches that value adult autonomy.

On a global scale, World Literacy Day underscores the ongoing challenge of illiteracy. According to UNESCO, at least 739 million youth and adults lack basic literacy skills. Educational experts emphasize the importance of respecting developmental stages in learning, noting that effective reading requires building phonological awareness and decoding skills rather than mere memorization.
