Literary festivals expand global cultural and publishing influence
The inaugural Abuja Festival of Literature and Ideas opened in Nigeria, focusing on the intersection of culture, democracy, and emerging technologies like artificial intelligence. Organized by the Book Buzz Foundation and co-funded by the European Union, the event aims to foster a stronger reading culture and establish a world-class platform that maintains a distinctly Nigerian identity. Festival Director Lola Shoneyin noted that the event seeks to bring local heritage into conversation with international artistic practices.
Separately, at the Frankfurt Book Fair, leaders from the Global Association of Literary Festivals (GAoLF) highlighted the increasing importance of festivals within the global publishing ecosystem. Administered by the Emirates Literature Foundation, GAoLF represents over 170 festivals worldwide. The discussions emphasized how these festivals drive readership, facilitate cultural exchange, and create vital connections between authors and audiences in an era where reading for pleasure is facing challenges.
