Literary releases explore human-animal relationships

Two new literary works examine the complex dynamics between humans and animals through different lenses.

In Argentina, author and literature professor Patricia Ratto has released a new collection of short stories titled ‘Cuidado al entrar’, published by Adriana Hidalgo. The book utilizes elements of the gothic, fantastic, and realistic to explore various creatures, including cynocephali—beings with human bodies and dog heads. Ratto uses animals as a 'reagent' to reveal hidden truths within her narratives, which range from dark themes to humor.

In Spain, Marta Vericat explores the concept of ‘mascotismo’ in her book ‘Mascotismo’. Vericat critiques the modern tendency to humanize pets, arguing that such behavior can prioritize human needs over the actual well-being of dogs and cats. She discusses the power imbalance in these relationships and the potential limitations placed on animals living in domestic confinement.
