Lithium battery explosion causes fire at Cumberland bike shop
An investigation has concluded that a lithium battery caused a structure fire at Dodge City Cycles in Cumberland on August 16. The fire, which began around 9:40 p.m., was reportedly caused by a battery that exploded while charging overnight.
The blaze started on the first floor of the bike shop and spread to the roof and the nearby Riding Fool Hostel. While the interior of the shop was completely damaged, the building's structure remains standing.
Approximately 32 firefighters from Cumberland and Courtenay responded to the incident. One firefighter was treated at a hospital for minor injuries sustained on the building’s second floor but has since returned home.
