Lithium-ion battery maintenance and temperature effects
Lithium-ion batteries, commonly used in smartphones, laptops, and e-bikes, are subject to specific chemical behaviors that affect their longevity and performance. To extend battery life, experts recommend avoiding extreme charge levels. Instead of constantly charging to 100 percent or letting the battery drop to 0 percent, a practice known as ‘flat cycling’—maintaining a charge between 20 and 90 percent—is advised.
Environmental factors, particularly cold temperatures, also significantly impact device operation. In cold weather, the internal resistance of lithium-ion batteries increases, causing voltage to drop. This can lead a device to shut down unexpectedly even if it shows a significant remaining charge, as the protective electronics misinterpret the voltage drop as an empty battery. This phenomenon is not permanent damage; capacity typically returns once the device warms up. To prevent this, users are encouraged to keep devices close to body heat, such as in an inner jacket pocket, rather than in external mounts or backpacks.
