Lithium-ion battery market reaches $150 billion as new research explores alternatives
The global lithium-ion battery market has reached a value of over $150 billion. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), global demand for these batteries has increased nearly a thousandfold over the last twenty-five years, while the average price of cells has dropped by 97%. This technology has become a pillar of the electric economy, powering electric vehicles, power grids, data centers, robotics, and drones.
While research originated in the United States, Europe, and Japan, and South Korea developed key electronic solutions, China has established dominant production capacity. The IEA notes that the strategic value of this technology now exceeds its commercial value, making it essential for nations seeking to reduce dependence on concentrated production areas.
As current lithium-ion technology approaches its energy storage limits, researchers are exploring alternatives. One promising area is lithium disulfide dichloride, an evolution of lithium-sulfur technology. By adding chlorine atoms to the electrochemical reaction, scientists aim to address issues like polysulfide migration and anode instability. While laboratory tests show potential for higher voltage and energy density, the technology has only been tested in small cells and is not yet ready for large-scale applications like electric vehicles.
