Lithium-ion battery safety and management systems

Lithium-ion batteries present significant safety risks if damaged, improperly charged, or incorrectly disposed of. Experts warn that these batteries, found in common devices like laptops, e-bikes, and smartphones, can undergo ‘thermal runaway’—a process where stored energy is released rapidly, leading to high temperatures and flammable gases.

To mitigate these risks, specialized 4S battery management systems (BMS) are used to monitor four cells connected in series. These systems provide continuous oversight of voltage, temperature, and state of charge, protecting against overvoltage, undervoltage, short circuits, and cell imbalance. Such technology is critical for operational safety and compliance, particularly in logistics and fleet management.

Fire safety experts emphasize that even invisible internal damage caused by drops or impacts can lead to fires during subsequent charging. Authorities urge the public not to dispose of lithium-ion batteries in regular household waste to prevent fires in waste management systems.
