Lithium Mining Poses Major Water and Agricultural Risks

The Nevada lithium mine is projected to use up to 3,200 gallons of water per ton of lithium extracted, triggering concerns over groundwater depletion, soil health degradation, reduced crop yields and strained irrigation resources for local farming communities. Over 60% of farms near the site have reported changes in soil quality within five years of mining activity.

Lithium brine extraction, a common method in arid regions such as South American salars, North American playas and African soda lakes, can lower local groundwater levels by as much as 65%. The process also raises soil salinity, threatens forest vegetation, and alters land‑use planning, affecting agricultural productivity and forest health worldwide. Sustainable management strategies are emphasized to balance mineral production with water and land stewardship.
