Lithium Universe recovers gallium and platinum from e-waste
Lithium Universe has announced the successful laboratory extraction of gallium and platinum from electronic waste using licensed diamide technology. In collaboration with the University of Edinburgh, researchers achieved recovery rates exceeding 99% for both metals under specific laboratory conditions.
The process involves dissolving metals from e-waste into a hydrochloric acid solution. By adjusting acidity levels, the technology can selectively target different high-value metals; for instance, stronger acidic conditions facilitate the precipitation of gallium.
While these results demonstrate the potential for a broader critical-metals recovery platform, the technology remains at the laboratory stage. Further development, scale-up, and commercial evaluation are required to determine its viability for industrial e-waste recycling.
