Lithuania: 76% of citizens support universal conscription by 2030

A recent survey conducted in August indicates that 76% of Lithuanian citizens support the implementation of universal conscription by 2030. According to Tomas Godliauskas, director of the Universal Defense Association, the high level of public support serves as a significant signal for the state to take necessary decisions regarding national defense.

Of those surveyed, 51% favor implementing the model as soon as possible, while over 25% support implementation by 2030. Only 12% of respondents believe that Lithuania does not need universal conscription at all. Edmundas Jakilaitis, head of the civic initiative ‘Stiprūs kartu’, noted that support for the measure is widespread across various sociological groups, ages, and regions.

Demographic data shows that citizens aged 60–84 are more in favor of rapid implementation, whereas those aged 18–29 show less enthusiasm. Regarding gender, 40.1% believe all men should be conscripted, while 19% believe the obligation should apply to both men and women. For women, 51.5% of respondents suggest that service should be voluntary and take various forms.
