Lithuania addresses nuclear safety and Russian drone incident

At the 70th IAEA General Conference, the Lithuanian delegation emphasized the necessity of strengthening nuclear and radiation safety. Lithuania expressed support for Ukraine against Russian threats to nuclear facilities and raised concerns regarding safety issues at the Belarusian nuclear power plant located near the Lithuanian border. The delegation also shared expertise regarding the decommissioning of the Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant.

Separately, Lithuanian Defense Minister Robertas Kaunas confirmed that a Russian drone was shot down in Lithuanian airspace earlier this week. According to the minister, the drone was originally targeting Ukraine but was diverted through Belarus into Lithuania after being affected by Ukrainian electronic warfare measures.

Investigations into the drone's origin and trajectory are ongoing, as specialists analyze recovered debris, including engines and computers. The minister noted that Lithuania is coordinating with Poland and NATO allies to investigate these incidents, which mirror similar drone sightings in Poland, Romania, and Germany.
