Lithuania and Latvia issue warnings over rising tick-borne disease risks

Health authorities in Lithuania and Latvia are warning of a second wave of tick activity as autumn approaches. In Lithuania, the National Public Health Center (NVSC) reports that ticks enter a new developmental stage when temperatures reach approximately 5–7 degrees Celsius, increasing the risk of infection for those spending time in nature for activities such as mushroom picking or berry gathering.

In Lithuania, 380 cases of tick-borne encephalitis have been registered so far this year, resulting in four deaths. While Lyme disease cases (8,164) and encephalitis cases are lower than the previous year, the risk remains significant. Experts emphasize that vaccination is the most effective protection against encephalitis.

In Latvia, the Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (SPKC) notes a high risk of tick-borne diseases. In 2025, Latvia recorded 186 cases of tick-borne encephalitis, an increase of 20 cases compared to 2024. Lyme disease cases also saw a significant rise, with 539 infections reported in 2025 compared to previous years. Vaccination for encephalitis is state-funded for children in specific Latvian regions.
