Lithuania and Taiwan partner on 5.6 million euro laser technology initiative

Lithuania and Taiwan have signed a memorandum of understanding to strengthen cooperation in laser technologies and semiconductor manufacturing. The agreement, signed by five organizations including the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) and the Lithuanian Laser Association, involves a planned investment of 5.6 million euros over two years.

The funds are designated for upgrading high-class equipment, conducting joint research, and technological development. Key areas of focus include heterogeneous integration and advanced semiconductor packaging, aiming to link Lithuanian laser expertise with Taiwan's semiconductor production capabilities.

This partnership builds upon Lithuania's established laser and photonics sector, which has grown from university research initiated in 1966 into an industry comprising over 60 companies and thousands of specialists. The sector currently sees an annual growth rate of 16%, with the United States serving as its primary export market.
