Lithuania approves compensation for military-related property damage

The Lithuanian government has approved a compensation procedure prepared by the Ministry of National Defence. This framework applies to cases where the Lithuanian military or NATO allied forces cause damage to the property of individuals or legal entities while lawfully using military force.

Defense Minister Robertas Kaunas stated that the regulation aims to protect citizens' interests while ensuring soldiers can act decisively against threats. For instance, a soldier neutralizing a threatening drone will not need to hesitate due to potential debris falling on civilian property.

Both individuals and organizations can apply for compensation through the Ministry of National Defence. Applications must include the date, circumstances, nature, and estimated amount of damage, along with evidence such as photos, videos, or expert reports. Non-pecuniary damage and lost income are not eligible for compensation. The Ministry will review requests within 20 working days, though this may be extended if additional documentation or expertise is required.

Compensation will be paid from the Ministry of National Defence's budget allocations or state reserve funds if necessary. Notably, if damage is caused by NATO allied forces, Lithuania will not seek reimbursement from them, instead assuming responsibility for the consequences of the allies' lawful actions within the country.
