Lithuania begins registration for 2027 municipal elections
The political campaign for Lithuania's municipal council and mayoral elections, scheduled for March 7, 2027, has officially commenced. As of the first week of the campaign, the Central Electoral Commission (VRK) has registered the first participants in the Jonava district, including the Lithuanian Social Democratic Party and the Liberal Movement.
Registration for political campaign participants remains open until October 28. The VRK has emphasized a critical residency requirement: candidates must have their place of residence declared in the specific municipality where they intend to run. Due to recent amendments to the Election Code, this declaration must be finalized no later than 130 days before the election to ensure eligibility.
While the full list of participants is still being finalized, the registration process for political entities continues nationwide. The VRK expects to have a clearer picture of the total number of registered participants by October 29, after which the submission of candidate lists and documentation will proceed through December 17.
