Lithuania celebrates Baltic Unity Day with traditional rituals
Various cultural events were held in Lithuania to observe Baltic Unity Day, focusing on ancestral traditions, folklore, and shared Baltic roots.
In Šiaulėnai, the ‘Ugnies sąšauka’ (Fire Call) event combined modern dance with ancient Baltic worldviews. The ceremony featured a mystery performance by the dance group ‘Inserta’ and included fire rituals led by Šatrijos Romuva priests. Participants engaged in a communal circle and honored a symbolic candle through traditional chants and offerings.
In Alytus, celebrations took place at the foot of the Alytus hillfort near the confluence of the Nemunas and Alytupis rivers. The event featured an exhibition of straw sculptures and demonstrations of traditional Dzūkija crafts, such as wood carving, weaving, and jewelry making based on archaeological findings. The evening concluded with a fire mystery and folklore performances by various ensembles, emphasizing the connection between nature, history, and cultural identity.
