Lithuania celebrates Žolinė traditions and observes holiday labor laws

Žolinė, the feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, is observed in Lithuania as a significant celebration blending Christian traditions with ancient folk customs marking the end of summer and the harvest.

Cultural observances include visiting churches with bouquets of herbs and flowers, as well as community events such as those held at the Lithuanian Ethnographic Museum. Traditional practices emphasize gratitude for nature's gifts, community bonding, and observing folk signs to predict autumn weather.

Regarding labor regulations, the holiday carries specific legal implications for employees. Under the Labor Code, work performed on Žolinė must be compensated at no less than double the standard hourly rate. If the work is also considered overtime, the rate increases to at least 2.5 times the standard wage. Additionally, the holiday does not automatically grant an extra day off if it falls on a weekend.
