Lithuania commemorates 37th anniversary of the Baltic Way

Lithuania will observe the 37th anniversary of the Baltic Way on August 23 with commemorative events in Kaunas and Vilnius. The historical event, which took place in 1989, saw approximately two million people from Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia form a human chain to symbolize their pursuit of freedom.

In Kaunas, a free concert will be held at 4:00 PM on the roof of the Science Island (Mokslo sala). The performance will feature singer and producer Linas Adomaitis performing alongside the Kaunas Bigband, led by conductor Tomas Botys. This event is part of the XXV International Festival ‘Operetė Kauno pilyje 2026’.

In Vilnius, a commemoration will take place at 12:00 PM at a recently renovated square near the Šeškinė clinic, which houses a shrine dedicated to the Baltic Way. The site has been updated with new paths, benches, and greenery to better serve the community. The ceremony will include music from the Šeškinė community ensemble and activities such as kite-making and bracelet weaving to symbolize unity and freedom.
