Lithuania detects unidentified object crossing airspace near Varėna

Lithuanian military radar detected an unidentified object crossing Lithuanian airspace near Varėna early Sunday morning. The object, which likely originated from Belarus, entered the country at 4:05 a.m. and exited into the Russian Kaliningrad region approximately 20 minutes later.

Authorities stated that while the object's exact nature could not be determined, there was no direct threat to citizens or infrastructure. Consequently, no air raid warnings were issued and NATO fighter jets were not scrambled. The State Border Guard Service noted that their systems are designed for ground-level monitoring and did not detect the object.

Following the incident, Lithuanian officials have raised questions regarding the decision-making process. Minister R. Kaunas has requested a detailed briefing from military leadership to understand why the object was not intercepted or why the public was not notified. National Crisis Management Center head Vilmantas Vitkauskas explained that the decision to remain passive was based on the object's trajectory and the assessment that it posed no immediate danger.
