Lithuania faces mandate to remove invasive fallow deer

In Lithuania, new environmental mandates require the removal of fallow deer from the wild by July 18 of next year. Originally introduced as decorative animals, some fallow deer escaped and established populations that are now classified as an invasive species under updated European Union lists.

The Environmental Protection Agency notes that while current management efforts include permits for removal, the species' impact on the environment is growing. However, the Deer Breeders Association warns that this directive was not coordinated with breeders and could cause significant economic losses for those raising the animals, as no compensation has been planned.

Separately, pet owners are advised to adjust feline nutrition during the autumn months. As cats become less active and sleep more due to shorter days, maintaining the same food portions can lead to weight gain. Experts recommend diets high in animal proteins and taurine, alongside increased hydration to combat dry indoor air during the heating season.
