Lithuania faces rising heating costs and inflation risks

Heating costs in Vilnius are projected to rise significantly this season. The supplier Gijos reported that heating prices in October will be 22.7% higher than the same month last year, increasing from 5.91 to 7.25 cents per kWh. A primary driver for this increase is the change in Value Added Tax (VAT) rates, which rose from a preferential 9% to the standard 21% for heating and hot water.

Economists from Latvijas Banka forecast that inflation could approach 4% next year, driven by rising energy resource costs. While food prices saw a slight decrease in September, the impact of energy prices on heating tariffs and services is expected to create upward pressure on food prices in the coming year. Geopolitical tensions in the Strait of Hormuz and logistical challenges in Europe contribute to continued energy market volatility.

To mitigate high bills, experts suggest checking for heat loss in homes. Common issues include air leaks in windows and doors, poorly insulated walls, and improper radiator maintenance, such as trapped air or obstructions blocking heat circulation. Residents in renovated buildings may see heating bills up to 40% lower than those in unrenovated structures.
