Lithuania fur farming ban faces implementation challenges
The Lithuanian Ministry of Agriculture has described the implementation of the 2023 animal welfare law as a complex and unmanaged situation. The legislation, passed by the Seimas, mandates a total ban on fur farming in Lithuania by 2027.
Česlovas Tallat-Kelpša, head of the Lithuanian Fur Breeders Association (LŽAA), expressed concerns regarding significant uncertainty and inadequate compensation for affected businesses. He noted that while the law requires operations to cease and farms to be dismantled by the end of the year, the current compensation framework does not reflect real losses.
Court experts have estimated damages at approximately 65 million euros, excluding costs for liquidating farm buildings, employee layoffs, and environmental cleanup. The LŽAA suggests the total economic impact could exceed 100 million euros, affecting nearly 1,000 families and the livelihoods of those in the sector.
