Lithuania introduces 50% discount on local train tickets

The Lithuanian government has implemented a 50 percent discount on local train tickets to mitigate the impact of high fuel prices. This measure, which took effect on Friday, is scheduled to remain in place until the end of the year. LTG Link, the passenger transport arm of the Lietuvos geležinkelių group, is adjusting prices and expects to attract approximately 45,000 new passengers through this initiative.

In addition to the discounts, new Swiss-made Stadler trains are expected to begin service at the end of October. The most popular routes include Vilnius–Kaunas, Vilnius–Klaipėda, and Vilnius–Tauragė.

Despite these efforts to support passengers, the LTG group faces financial pressures due to the energy crisis. Acting head of LTG, A. Rumskas, noted that the company's costs have increased by more than 4 million euros this year due to global energy market fluctuations, such as events in the Strait of Hormuz. The company is also managing challenges related to the Rail Baltica project, including the termination of a major contract for a bridge construction in Jonava.
