Lithuania introduces new Stadler FLIRT electric trains

Lithuanian Railways has launched the first of 15 new Stadler FLIRT electric trains, marking the largest fleet renewal in the history of independent Lithuania. The initial service operates on the Vilnius–Kaunas–Vilnius route, with plans to expand to the Vilnius–Klaipėda–Vilnius line by the end of the year.

In addition to electric models, battery-powered trains are scheduled to begin service this December on the Kaunas–Šiauliai–Kaunas, Radviliškis–Klaipėda–Radviliškis, and Vilnius–Varėna–Marcinkonys–Vilnius routes. These battery-powered units will allow for modern rolling stock to operate on sections of the network that lack full electrification.

Transport Minister Juras Taminskas noted that the overhaul aims to provide a significantly improved travel experience, featuring increased space, quieter compartments, charging ports, and bistro areas. The modernization effort also focuses on accessibility for passengers with disabilities, families with strollers, and cyclists.
