Lithuania is not considering renaming its Taiwanese Representative Office

Lithuania is not currently considering a change to the name of its Taiwanese Representative Office, according to R. Motuzas. He suggested that any decision regarding the name should first come from Taiwan itself, based on their assessment of the surrounding political environment.

Discussions regarding the office's name have been ongoing since the beginning of the year. While some officials, including former Prime Minister Inga Ruginienė, suggested renaming it to 'Taipei', others, such as Speaker of the Seimas Juozas Olekas, argued against a hasty change, stating it would likely yield no real results. President Gitanas Nausėda noted that while discussions are possible, the outcome could be either positive or negative.

The diplomatic tension stems from Lithuania's decision to open the Taiwanese office in late 2021, which led China to impose strict diplomatic and economic sanctions. Beijing, which considers Taiwan a province, downgraded its diplomatic relations with Vilnius to the level of a chargé d'affaires. Current government programs aim to normalize diplomatic relations with China to levels seen in other European Union member states.
