Lithuania labor market sees rising value in workers over 50
In Lithuania, there is a growing trend of employers valuing workers over the age of 50 for their professional experience, responsibility, and ability to handle complex situations. Since the beginning of the year, 35,000 people over 50 have found employment. While the unemployment rate for this demographic remains at approximately 10 percent—higher than the national average of 8 percent—the number of unemployed individuals in this age group has decreased compared to last year.
Despite these improvements, challenges remain. Job seekers over 50 face longer search periods, averaging eight months compared to four months for those under 29. Stereotypes regarding technological literacy and learning capacity persist, often resulting in older workers being offered lower-skilled positions such as cleaners, plumbers, or sales clerks.
Various sectors are actively integrating older staff. Lithuanian Railways reports valuing the loyalty and specific knowledge of older employees, including those transitioning into IT roles. In healthcare, Klaipėda University Hospital seeks experienced candidates, while in manufacturing, companies like SLT industrial components note that older workers excel in roles requiring precision, such as assembly and quality control.
