Lithuania: Labour rules for Žolinė holiday
The State Labour Inspectorate (VDI) has provided guidance regarding working hours and compensation for the upcoming Žolinė holiday on August 15. Because the holiday falls on a Saturday, employees are not entitled to an additional day off on Monday, as the Labour Code does not provide for moving a holiday to another workday when it coincides with a rest day.
On the eve of the holiday, August 14, working hours for most employees must be shortened by one hour. This rule applies to full-time, part-time, remote, and shift workers, unless they are already on a legally established reduced working hour schedule, such as certain healthcare professionals, teachers, or pharmacists. If an employer cannot shorten the workday due to operational requirements, the extra hour must be compensated as overtime.
For those required to work during the Žolinė holiday, compensation must be at least double the standard wage, while overtime work on this day must be paid at a rate of at least 2.5 times the standard rate.
