Lithuania launches first hydrogen refueling station in Klaipėda

In early June, Lithuania opened its first hydrogen refueling station in the port city of Klaipėda. The facility, built by AB Klaipėdos uostas, supports the EU Regulation (EU) 2023/1804 on alternative fuel infrastructure and is intended primarily for road transport.

The project also includes an experimental port‑service vessel powered by electricity generated from hydrogen fuel cells or a rechargeable battery, a combination described as unique worldwide. Technical details about hydrogen fuel‑cell cars were clarified using manufacturer documentation and research from Kaunas University of Technology’s hydrogen transport laboratory, where students tested models such as the Hyundai ix35 FCEV, Hyundai Nexo and Toyota’s hydrogen system.

Hydrogen cars operate like electric vehicles but store hydrogen in 700‑bar tanks, supplying electricity via a fuel‑cell stack. Typical range is up to 600 km in summer and 300‑400 km in winter, with tanks holding 5‑6 kg of hydrogen. The station’s opening marks a significant step in building Lithuania’s alternative‑fuel network.
