Lithuania leads Europe in engineered wood production despite low domestic use
Lithuania has emerged as one of Europe’s strongest producers of engineered wood, exporting high-value structural solutions to numerous countries worldwide. Despite this technological leadership, a paradox exists within the domestic market: only about 1% of locally produced Laminated Veneer Lumber (LVL) is used in Lithuania, with the vast majority being exported to nations such as the Netherlands, Belgium, and Scandinavia.
The low domestic demand is attributed to historical construction preferences in Lithuania, where concrete and masonry have traditionally dominated. In contrast, Scandinavian countries have long utilized wood as a primary building material. While Lithuanian companies like VMG Lignum construction possess the capacity to significantly increase production, the local market has yet to fully adopt these advanced, high-precision, and sustainable construction materials.
