Lithuania mushroom foraging season depends on weather

The mushroom foraging season is underway in Lithuania, with the abundance of the harvest depending heavily on upcoming weather conditions. Gintarė Karelina, an environmental specialist from the Trakai regional branch of the State Forest Enterprises, notes that both moisture levels in the soil and air temperature are critical for growth.

While various species such as chanterelles, boletes, and various mushrooms have been appearing since late spring, the current yield of porcini mushrooms has been lower than usual due to dry weather and a lack of precipitation. If more rain occurs, a more abundant harvest could be expected in September. If the autumn remains warm and moist, the season may extend into October or November.

Experts emphasize safety, advising foragers to only pick species they know well. While there are approximately 1,000 different mushroom species in the Baltic states, with about 400 considered edible, most foragers typically only collect 20 to 30 well-known varieties.
