Lithuania mushroom foraging season shows potential for autumn surge

The mushroom foraging season is underway in Lithuania, with experts and foragers monitoring the abundance of various species. While some foragers report record-breaking years for porcini mushrooms, forestry specialists note that current yields have been somewhat limited due to dry weather and a lack of precipitation.

Gintarė Karelina, an environmental management specialist, explains that a successful harvest depends on a specific balance of temperature and soil moisture rather than just rainfall alone. If the autumn remains warm and damp, a more abundant harvest of porcini mushrooms could be expected in September, with the season potentially extending into October or November.

Currently, various species including chanterelles, boletes, and various mushrooms are being found in the forests. Foragers are advised to only collect species they can identify with certainty and to avoid damaging the forest floor or non-edible mushrooms.
