Lithuania not ready to raise retirement age, says Minister

Lithuania's Minister of Social Security and Labour, Inga Ruginienė, stated that the country is not currently prepared to increase the retirement age. She cited significant challenges regarding the health of workers and age discrimination in the labor market as primary obstacles.

Ruginienė noted that many citizens begin to lose their health around age 50, forcing them to seek lighter work or face unemployment. She contrasted Lithuania's situation with Northern European countries, where robust occupational health protections allow older citizens to remain in the workforce longer and decide for themselves when to retire.

Currently, the retirement age in Lithuania is unified at 65 for both men and women. To receive a full pension, citizens must meet specific social insurance seniority requirements, which are set to increase from 34.5 years this year to 35 years starting in 2027.
