Lithuania proposes 2027 budget with 3.8% GDP deficit
The Lithuanian government has submitted the 2027 state and Social Insurance (Sodra) budget projects to Parliament. The proposed state budget includes a deficit of 3.8% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP), which exceeds the 3% limit set by European fiscal rules for eurozone countries. The state debt is projected to reach 48.2% of GDP.
Key budget allocations include over 4.8 billion euros (5% of GDP) for the Ministry of National Defence. Other planned expenditures focus on social security, including increases in pensions, the minimum wage, and public sector salaries. The Social Insurance fund (Sodra) is expected to receive nearly 11.3 billion euros in revenue, with pension payments accounting for approximately 7.8 billion euros.
Opposition members and political figures have raised concerns regarding the rising debt. Critics warn that by 2029, interest payments alone could reach approximately 2 billion euros, potentially limiting future capacity for investments in health, education, and infrastructure. In response to the deficit, the Farmers and Greens Union has proposed increasing excise duties on alcohol and tobacco to generate additional revenue.
