Lithuania proposes 770 million euro family policy package
The Lithuanian Ministry of Social Security and Labour has introduced a family policy package valued at approximately 770 million euros. The initiative consists of nine measures designed to enhance financial security for families and improve the balance between work and family life.
Key components of the package include increased childcare benefits (123.6 million euros), a childcare and employment basket (110 million euros) to assist with costs like nannies or camps, and 67 million euros allocated for housing support. The plan also aims to provide free school meals, support for children's employment, and increased future pensions for parents raising children. Unlike previous systems that focused primarily on a child's first two years, this package intends to provide continuous support from infancy through school age and adolescence.
While officials emphasize the need for a comprehensive, long-term approach to support families throughout all stages of child-rearing, some analysts question whether the measures sufficiently address demographic challenges. Critics suggest that for the policy to effectively boost birth rates, support should be more heavily weighted toward families having second or third children rather than being uniform across all family sizes.
