Lithuania records surge in voluntary enlistments as Russian threat rises

Lithuanian armed forces received more than 8,100 applications to join the military this year, according to LRT. About 4,400 young men volunteered before the official conscription list was published, and another 3,700 applied after the list was released. This far exceeds the pre‑war average of roughly 2,000 annual volunteers.

The Defence Ministry said that, while the number of applicants is historic, the army cannot accommodate everyone because of limited recruitment capacity. Officials urged graduates and prospective university students not to postpone their studies because of military service. Lithuania reinstated conscription in 2015 after regional security concerns grew following Russia’s actions in Ukraine. The small Baltic state, with a population of 2.8 million, also hosts a German armored brigade that could grow to 5,000 troops, and lawmakers are debating a constitutional amendment to permit the deployment of nuclear weapons on its territory.
