Lithuania releases high-precision LiDAR terrain scanning data
The National Land Service of Lithuania has released new laser scanning data for parts of the country via the geoportal.lt spatial information portal. Managed by the Construction Sector Development Agency, these updated datasets provide a significantly more detailed view of the terrain and physical objects.
The data was collected using LiDAR technology, which uses laser pulses to create a ‘point cloud’ of the earth's surface. This allows for precise three-dimensional visualization of the landscape, including vegetation and buildings. The 2025 scanning initiative represents a qualitative leap in precision, ensuring a density of at least 15 points per square meter, with horizontal error margins up to 30 centimeters and vertical error margins up to 10 centimeters.
This high-resolution information is intended to support territory planning, infrastructure projects, environmental monitoring, and municipal decision-making processes.
