Lithuania reports rise in tick-borne encephalitis cases and deaths
Health officials in Lithuania are warning of a second wave of tick activity as autumn approaches. According to the National Public Health Center, ticks remain active when average daily temperatures are approximately 5–7 °C or higher.
Between January and August 2026, Lithuania recorded 380 cases of tick-borne encephalitis, including four deaths. This compares to 438 cases and three deaths during the same period in 2025. Additionally, 8,164 cases of Lyme disease were registered in the first eight months of 2026, down from 10,017 in the previous year.
Experts distinguish between the two conditions: tick-borne encephalitis is caused by a virus that can affect the central nervous system, while Lyme disease is caused by bacteria. While vaccination provides the most reliable protection against encephalitis, there is currently no vaccine for Lyme disease. Health officials advise individuals to avoid tick bites and remove any attached ticks as quickly as possible.
