Lithuania Restarts Economic Cooperation Talks with Taiwan

After a cabinet reshuffle halted earlier discussions, Lithuania’s foreign ministry announced that talks on an economic cooperation action plan with Taiwan have been resumed under the new government. The ministry said the negotiation aims to build a sustainable economic relationship that supports Lithuania’s high‑tech sector and aligns with the country’s 21st‑government agenda and its 2023 Indo‑Pacific strategy. While the specific contents of the plan remain undisclosed, officials emphasized that Lithuania’s policy stance toward Taiwan stays unchanged and that cooperation will cover trade, commerce, education, research, culture and people‑to‑people exchanges.

The pause in talks was caused by the previous administration’s internal re‑organisation; the plan had been expected to be drafted by the end of May and signed in June. Lithuania initially permitted a Taiwan representative office in Vilnius in 2021, but later expressed disappointment over the limited scale of Taiwanese investment, with the prime minister describing the decision to allow the office as a strategic error. Negotiations are now ongoing with the Taiwan representative office present at the table.
